Artist Statement: Collection II: Les Français captures my experience of memory in motion—much like a photograph taken while moving fast. When you take a picture of something in motion, the image blurs, yet certain colors or elements remain distinct. This is how I remember my travels through France: a blur of movement and frenetic energy, but with specific colors and sensations that stand out amidst the rush.
In my mind, these memories are like static photographs, but the images within them are always in motion, encapsulating the energy of everything I saw and did. Each piece in this series reflects that sense of movement, a blurred memory of my time in France. Yet in each of those memories, a distinct color stands out, anchoring the experience in my mind.
The palette of blues, tans, beiges, whites, and touches of black are the colors that defined my time overseas. Whether I was consciously searching for them, or they simply imprinted themselves on me, these colors are the essence of the France I remember. Through abstract expressionism, I’ve translated these impressions—of a bike ride through the grounds of Versailles, many walks through the Tuileries Garden, a wander through the Louvre, and the quiet elegance of the countryside—into something visual, capturing the motion, energy, and fleeting beauty of my experience through color and movement on paper.
The choice of using paper as my medium was intentional, reflecting the butcher paper that wrapped our daily baguettes—a small yet significant detail that became a symbol of my experience, grounding each memory in something tactile and familiar. Through color and movement on paper, this series captures the beauty, energy, and elegance of the France of my memories.
